PLANS SUPERGRUP | Kanye West, Pharrell Williams and Lupe Fiasco are planning to turn their one-off collaboration as hip-hop supergroup CRS (Child Rebel Soldiers) into a full-length album. The trio taped track Us Placers for West's mix-tape Can't Tell Me Nothing and were so pleased with the result, they now plan to record an album of songs as CRS. Fiasco tells Billboard.com, "Now our labels are working it out. Whoever is going to pay is going to pay a whole hell of a lot. Everybody is excited, but Us Placers is the only record we have." |

FIASCO HOPS HIS WAY TO SUCCESS | Lollapolooza attracts some of the biggest and most unique bands in the business, that much is a given. So when they decided to tap Chicago MC Lupe Fiasco to perform on the third and largest day of the festival it was obvious that there was something about him. Playing on a massive stage to a crowded audience of mostly Chicagoans, Fiasco dominated the stage. The hip-hop powerhouse, consisting of anywhere from two to three members depending on the song, danced all over the stage, adding an element of excitement while playing it up for the audience. Fiasco’s unique style is brought about by his band’s ability to make virtually any beat their own. For those not accustomed to Fiasco’s style he grabs a hold of a popular song and mixes it up beyond recognizably. Like any good lyricist Fiasco grabs the bull by he horns and lets his words fly in a style that, if they weren’t structured so well, might seem improvised. His newest protégé Gemini took the stage about a quarter of the way through the set and almost stole the show. The dynamic between Fiasco’s crew and Gemini was enough to tear the nonexistent roof off the stage. More than once Fiasco got repetitive, using the same call outs at least a dozen times throughout the show. I do give him points for obscurity as he yelled out “Can you dig it?!” from the camp cinema classic The Warriors. Fiasco’s musical knowledge shone brightly as he played with familiar sounds mixing them into his own. As a Chicagoan this native son shows his heritage proudly. Whether a Northsider or a Southsider, Fiasco welcomes all into his hip-hop fold. Most of his songs have a message of love and respect for each other, a treat in a gangster rap world. When Fiasco takes the stage the audience can be rest assured it will be a great show. |

LUPE FIASCO SHOW IN POSTPONED | Monday's Lupe Fiasco show at House of Blues has been rescheduled to Monday, March 26. Tickets for the Chicago rapper's March 19 show will be honored. House of Blues is at East Fourth Street and Euclid Avenue, Cleveland. Tickets ($20-$28) are on sale at www.hob.com and at Ticketmaster centers, at www.ticketmaster.com or by phone at 216-241-5555 in Cleveland or 330-945-9400 in Akron. When the rapper launched his solo debut, "Lupe Fiasco's Food and Liquor," with a show at Metro last September, his boyish enthusiasm led to a somewhat one-note performance. But with that initial excitement tempered, it was easier to detect the subtle nuances in the tunes, whether he was spitting flights of fancy such as "The Cool," with the undead wandering South Side streets, or emoting on the daddy-done-me-wrong conflict of "He Say She Say." Supported by only a DJ and a hype man (save for an instrumental interlude where nine dancers and an army of drummers journeyed to the African heartland), Fiasco proved a maxim the Roots would be wise to take under advisement: Sometimes less really is more. |
